Mariazell with basilica
In the beginning (establishment in 1157) there was a cell that was build by a Benedictine monk from Sankt for his beloved statue of Maria. The oldest building was probably made by Lord Heinrich von Mähren and the Gothic choir was established in 1340. The hall „Langhaus“ was built in 1360. King Ludwig I. of Hungary sponsored these constructions.
At the outside as well as in the inside the church is a conjunction of gothic and baroque: 2 tower in baroque style flank the gothic tower in the middle with its luxuriant decoration out of stones, a cupola overarches the eastern part, the high windows and the terra-cotta coloured pilaster and white walls highlight the special character. Chapels were attached at the side oft he high hall with galleries stretching over them and opening into the new treasury.
